2018 | Year One in Review

Hey Everyone — Hayley here!

If I’m being totally honest, I have been putting off writing this post because I have no idea how I can condense this last year, our first full year in business, into one blog post! For those who know me personally, you know I can be quite the rambler…especially when it comes to The Refinery. I am like an exhausted, proud new mama who is watching her baby turn one year old!

I can still remember day one SO vividly. I remember what time I woke up in the morning, what I was wearing (and how weird I felt wearing real clothes after having been on a construction site for an entire year) — I remember what music I put on through our new Sonos and I remember prepping my team best I could because truth is, I had no clue how the day was going to go.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t cry that first day — I cried, I laughed and then geared up for day two. Since then it has been nonstop 24/7 and I wouldn’t have it any other way. This passion project of mine fuels my entire soul and I feel more prepared than ever to roar into 2019 loud, proud and more prepared than ever — Because despite the tears and constant trash juice on my shoes, 2018 has been a year full of bonding with strangers who are now close friends, enough laughter to last a lifetime, too much wine after 16 hours days and more learning than I could ever describe in a single post.

Am I rambling yet?

February 2018 | The Refinery’s Original Gangsters + My Husband, my biggest cheerleader

Here are just a few highlights from The Refinery’s first full year in business — Cheers to you 2018, it’s be a delight!

  1. Our Original Members | By far the best thing about The Refinery was the people who believed in it before it even existed — Cheers to the individuals and teams who took hard hat tours with me back in 2017, and then showed up every day to fill the space with hustle & bustle, and make a family out of a room full of a million different strangers!

  2. Refinery Employees, Volunteers & Interns | Running a business is not easy…Running a brick & mortar in the middle of downtown Austin is not easy. The Refinery would not be where it is today without the individuals who have rolled with the punches of a startup, and served as invaluable assets to making this business a success!

  3. Create & Cultivate | Holy moly. The mother of all creative conferences for women. Literally a dream come true having them as our first SXSW event ever. Hosting Founder Jaclyn Johnson + Gina Rodriguez, Camila Alves, Brooklyn Decker and so many more badass ladies was beyond the DREAM!

  4. The Copper Table | Our summer dinner series with Tito’s Handmade Vodka was beyond delicious. We got to partner up with Chef Eric Silverstein from The Peached Tortilla and Chef Fiore Tedesco of L’Oca D’Oro to create two beautiful dinners in our event space that brought together so many different people from the community, all passionate about food and connection!

  5. Morning Hustle Storytelling | A personal favorite of mine. This series brought community members together to practice the art of storytelling…first thing in the morning! The series benefited one of our favorite local organizations — Girls Empowerment Network :)

  6. The Museum of Donuts with A Taste of Koko | Y’all — People LOVE taking photos of donuts stacked on cups of Chameleon Cold Brew…who knew!? The talented Jane Ko draws one heck of a crowd and we had a blast creating a pop up experience with her — Over 1,500 Austinites stopped in to experience our 3 hour donut pop up!

Y’all, I could go on and on. Thank you so much to EVERYONE who has supported The Refinery by working with us, collaborating with us or attending events — We could not be more PUMPED to be rolling into 2019 feeling so grateful and ready to kick some serious butt!!

Ladies, you ready!?
